Dual Fuel Boilers

Dual fuel boilers give plants a practical way to keep heating and steam services running when fuel supply, tariffs or site conditions change. Ai-TEC supplies, manufactures and maintains dual fuel boiler systems for commercial and industrial sites across Gauteng and nationwide.

What a dual fuel boiler does on site

A dual fuel boiler is built to run on two fuel sources, usually gas and diesel, with controls that let the plant switch between them when needed. On mixed utility sites this helps keep production going during gas interruptions, maintenance shutdowns, pipework work, or when one fuel is simply more economical at the time. For factories, laundries, food plants, hospitals and property portfolios, that fuel choice can make day to day operations a lot easier.

Ai-TEC supplies dual fuel boiler systems for steam and hot water duties, with layouts suited to new installations or replacement work. We work from our Jet Park, Boksburg base and support sites from Germiston to Pretoria, Midrand, Sandton and further afield. The right arrangement depends on the load, the available services, the available plant room space and whether the site needs manual changeover or automatic fuel management.

Sizes, outputs and fuel options

Dual fuel boilers are selected to match the heating demand, pressure requirement and operating hours of the plant. Smaller systems may suit hot water and process pre-heating, while larger units are used where steam demand is continuous and production cannot stop. We can assist with packaged boiler sets, skid-mounted assemblies, and site-built arrangements where access is tight or the plant room has limited headroom.

  • Hot water or low-pressure steam duty for commercial buildings and light industry
  • Medium and high-output boiler packages for process plants and production lines
  • Automatic or manual fuel changeover
  • Burner controls set up for gas and diesel firing
  • Options for single boiler duty or duty and standby arrangements

Typical packages can be specified from about 100 kg/h steam up to several tonnes per hour, depending on the site requirement. The final selection should be checked against fuel availability, stack routing, feedwater quality and the boiler house layout so the plant does not end up under-sized or awkward to service later.

Where dual fuel boilers make the most sense

These boilers suit sites that need operating resilience. A factory in Boksburg may want gas for day-to-day running but diesel back-up for load-shedding, maintenance windows or unexpected interruptions. A hospital or care facility may need dependable heat for domestic hot water and laundry services. In the food sector, temperature control and wash-down cycles often cannot wait. Dual fuel also helps in remote areas where gas supply is not consistent, or where there are municipal pressure issues.

They are also useful where fuel planning matters. Some operators prefer to switch to the more cost-effective fuel at certain times of year, while others need a standby option for compliance or production security. In coastal areas, the equipment selection and protection need extra attention because humidity and salt air can shorten component life if the installation is not specified properly.

  • Hospitals, clinics and healthcare facilities
  • Food processing, breweries and dairies
  • Laundries and textile plants
  • Commercial buildings with central hot water systems
  • Industrial sites needing steam for process or cleaning

Installation needs, services and plant room checks

A dual fuel boiler needs correct fuel pipe sizing, safe burner setup, proper flue design and enough space for servicing. If the site uses gas, pressure regulation and isolation must be planned from the start. If diesel is included, the day tank or bulk tank arrangement must be checked, along with spill control and pump duty. Electrical supply is usually straightforward, but controls, interlocks and alarms must be protected against the realities of load-shedding and power dips.

Before installation we look at the boiler base, drainage, access routes, ventilation and whether lifting equipment can reach the plant room. In busy municipal or commercial buildings, access timing may need to work around tenants, production shifts or by-laws. A well planned install keeps the boiler easy to inspect and servicng later, instead of boxing it into a corner that no one can reach with a spanner.

  • Correct fuel pressure and flow to suit the burner range
  • Ventilation sized for safe combustion air
  • Flue and stack routing that meets site and municipal requirements
  • Electrical isolation, controls and emergency shut-off points
  • Access for cleaning, tube inspection and burner removal

Care, servicing and reliability over time

Dual fuel boilers work best when they are serviced regularly and tuned for the actual fuel being used. Burner setting, combustion air, nozzle condition, gas train condition, flame stability and water treatment all affect performance. If the boiler runs too rich or too lean, you lose efficiency and increase wear. Scale on the waterside and soot on the fireside also waste fuel and put stress on the unit.

Ai-TEC supports annual inspections, combustion tuning, water treatment support, refractory relining and plant refurbishment. For sites with high operating hours, we recommend scheduled shutdown checks so we can inspect safety valves, low-water protection, pumps, controls and heat transfer surfaces before small faults become unplanned stoppages. A missed service can turn into a long breakdown, especially when parts have to move between Gauteng and other provinces.

  • Boiler servicing and combustion checks
  • Water quality testing and treatment support
  • Burner cleaning and fuel train inspection
  • Refractory repairs and flue gas path cleaning
  • Emergency callouts for breakdowns and fuel changeover faults

What to check before you order

When you request a dual fuel boiler, the more detail you can give us the better the recommendation. We need to know the duty, the expected operating hours, whether the site needs steam or hot water, and what fuel is already available. On some projects the issue is not the boiler itself but the feedwater system, storage tank, gas line size or the lack of safe access for maintenance crews.

Please have the following information ready where possible: required output, operating pressure or temperature, preferred fuel arrangement, available floor space, chimney route, and whether the plant must fit inside an existing boiler room. If you have an older unit that needs replacing, photographs and a simple drawing of the layout help a lot. We can then advise on supply, fabrication, installation and ongoing servicing from our Gauteng team.

  • Steam output or hot water duty required
  • Primary and backup fuel types
  • Available gas pressure or diesel storage capacity
  • Plant room size, access width and ceiling height
  • Any corrosion, scaling or refractory issues on the current boiler

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can a dual fuel boiler switch fuels during operation?

Yes, many systems can switch over with the correct controls and burner setup. The changeover method depends on the boiler package and the site fuel arrangement.

Is a dual fuel boiler suitable for load-shedding sites?

Yes. Sites often use gas as the main fuel and diesel as backup, or the other way round. That helps keep hot water or steam available when one service is interrupted.

Do you service existing dual fuel boilers?

Yes. We handle servicing, combustion tuning, inspections, refractory relining and breakdown support for dual fuel boiler installations.
