Steam Skids

Steam skids give you a complete steam plant in one compact package, built for sites where plant space is tight and time on site is limited. Ai-TEC supplies, installs and services packaged skid units for commercial and industrial use across Gauteng and nationally.

What a Steam Skid Is and Why It Saves Space

A steam skid is a pre-assembled steam plant mounted on a steel base frame, with the main equipment, pipework, valves, controls and safety fittings arranged together before it reaches site. Instead of piecing together a boiler room on the floor, you get a compact package that can be lifted into position, connected up, tested and put to work with less coordination on site.

This suits projects where the builder, electrical contractor, plumber and mechanical team all have a short window to work in the same area. It also helps on sites in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Boksburg and Midrand where plant room access can be tight, and in coastal or humid areas where neat pipe routing and protected instrumentation make maintenance easier. A well set up skid can cut installation time quite a bit, and reduce the number of site errors that lead to call-backs later.

Ai-TEC supplies steam skids for new installations, plant upgrades and replacement duties where the existing boiler room is too slow or too cramped to work in safely.

Typical Steam Skid Sizes, Ratings and Options

Steam skids are built to suit the duty, from smaller process needs to heavier continuous loads. The package can be sized around the steam demand, feedwater condition, available services and the space that is actually available in the plant room. We build for practical use, not just neat drawings.

  • Steam output typically from 150 kg/h to 5 000 kg/h, with larger builds available for specific projects
  • Working pressure commonly 3 bar, 6 bar, 10 bar or higher where the plant requires it
  • Fuel options can include natural gas, LPG or oil fired arrangements depending on site supply
  • Options for degassing, feedwater tanks, blowdown vessels, softening integration and condensate return
  • Control panels with lead lag duty, fault indication and remote shutdown inputs
  • Frame sizes matched to door access, crane lift limits and transport width limits

We can also supply skid packages with extra isolation valves, sample cooling, chemical dosing points and metering, if your maintenance team needs better control over the system.

Where Steam Skids Work Best

Steam skids are a good fit for food production, laundries, canteens, small processing lines, healthcare facilities, chemical rooms, abattoirs and light manufacturing plants. They are also useful for temporary plant while a permanent boiler house is being upgraded, or where a tenant needs steam without committing to a full fixed boiler house build.

In many Gauteng sites the main issue is not just steam demand, it is how to get equipment in and how to keep the plant legal and serviceable. A skid helps when ceiling height is low, the room must share space with other services, or the client wants faster commissioning before month end. It is also useful when municipal or landlord rules limit what can be built on site. The package can be delivered as a single unit, so your team has one point to connect for water, fuel, power and steam discharge.

For factories in Germiston, Kempton Park and Boksburg, the usual drivers are speed, access and less downtime during shutdowns.

Installation, Power and Gas Requirements

Installation starts with a site check. We confirm the floor loading, access route, flue route, service clearances and whether the steam skid will sit indoors or outdoors under cover. The base frame must be level and the area must allow safe access for inspection, valve operation and burner servicing. If the unit is outdoors, weather protection matters, especially near the coast or in open yards where rain and dust can get into control gear.

Power needs depend on the package, but the skid will usually need a dedicated electrical supply for pumps, controls and burner management. If the unit is gas fired, we check line pressure, regulator capacity, safety shut-off valves and ventilation. For oil fired systems, the fuel storage and line layout must be safe and accessible. Steam discharge, blowdown drainage and condensate return must be planned before the skid arrives. If these parts are sorted early, commissioning is far quicker and there is less back and forth on site.

  • Check access width, turning space and lift plans before delivery
  • Allow for service access around the burner, control panel and valves
  • Confirm water quality and treatment requirements before first start-up
  • Confirm steam pressure and temperature needs for the process
  • Plan drainage for blowdown and washdown water

Care, Servicing and What Usually Needs Attention

A steam skid needs the same regular care as any boiler plant, just in a more compact layout. That means checking burner settings, water treatment, pressure controls, pumps, traps and safety valves on a scheduled basis. If the site runs long hours or load-shedding forces repeated starts and stops, the controls and ignition parts need extra attention. Small issues can grow quickly when the plant is cycling hard.

We recommend routine inspections, combustion tuning, annual servicing and planned refractory checks where applicable. Feedwater quality must be watched closely, because scale and carryover reduce heat transfer and can damage tubes, pumps and valves. If the system includes a condensate return line, that should be checked for leaks, contamination and steam trap failures. In practical terms, a tidy skid is easier to maintain, but it still needs eyes on it. No point putting a premium package in place and then leaving it to run blind.

Ai-TEC service teams cover Gauteng from Jet Park, Boksburg and can assist nationally when a shutdown or repair window is booked.

What to Check Before You Order a Steam Skid

Before ordering, it helps to have a clear picture of the duty and the site constraints. The more complete the information, the better the package fits first time and the fewer surprises there are during installation. We normally ask for process details, utility details and site drawings if they are available.

  • Required steam output, pressure and operating hours
  • Fuel type available on site and confirmed supply pressure or storage arrangement
  • Water source, hardness level and whether softening or dosing is already in place
  • Indoor or outdoor installation, plus available footprint and height
  • Electrical supply details, including voltage and phase
  • Delivery access, lift equipment and any building restrictions

It also helps to know whether you need extra accessories such as a blowdown vessel, feedwater tank, pressure reducing station, condensate return tank or remote monitoring. If the skid must fit through a standard doorway or under an existing roof line, tell us early. A few centimetres can save a lot of site pain later, especially where plant rooms were built years ago and drawings are not exact.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can a steam skid be installed in a tight plant room?

Yes. That is one of the main reasons to choose a skid package. We check access, clearances and service space before final sizing so the unit can be lifted in and maintained safely.

What utilities do I need on site?

You will normally need water, electrical supply, fuel supply, drainage and a route for steam discharge or flueing. The exact needs depend on the boiler size and fuel type.

Do you service steam skids after installation?

Yes. Ai-TEC handles servicing, combustion tuning, water treatment support, annual inspections and breakdown callouts, with teams based in Gauteng and support available nationally.
